Creating a writer’s retreat fit for Devon’s stunning coastline

We regularly receive enquiries from writers looking for a more productive space to help get the creative juices flowing. One such call came from the successful writing duo, Minette Marrin and her husband, Ian Hislop – also in search of the perfect writing space.

Before meeting the couple, we could see instantly why Minette had earmarked a particular spot for her Pod, incredible elevated views of a wonderful far-reaching garden. But the sloping, densely planted space brought it’s own challenges. But we love a challenge. Chatting with Minette’s gave us a real understanding of her vision, including what she wanted to use her space for and how to plan for the best light and views. Both were crucial elements of Minette’s brief and she had a clear idea of how her Pod should look and feel.

Another major design consideration was the fact that their home was located in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the stunning Devon coastline. Close liaison with local planning officers ensured we provided a space that complied with the local planning policy whilst realising Minette’s vision.

So, measurements in place and using the style of our popular Glide Pod as a guide, our designers began planning how to create the perfect building for the space available. Shortly after, and with planning permission in place the Pod Space team began building this unique writer’s Pod.
